7 steps to make Gamification work for you!

A Booming Trend

Recently, gamification has had a tremendous impact on social interaction and online markets.  Although this concept has been around for some time with frequent flyer miles, happy hour at the bar, etc., modern technology and the influence of the current games culture has affected advertising, brands, educators, and even governments to change.  But can everything really become more engaging, social, and fun just by incorporating game mechanics? EnGaming thinks so, but what can you do to prepare for this conversion?

How Gamification can work for you!

It is no longer a question of if I should gamify, but how I should gamify.  There is no time like the present to explore the possibilities of how your brand or company could be enhanced with some simple considerations:

1.  Acknowledge the Elements of Motivation!

There could be many influences that drive a person to do an activity and find it fun.  What do you enjoy doing and why?

Change is good! Everyone knows the one thing that always stays constant is change, but sometimes it is hard to accept.

3.  Differentiate Intrinsic Vs Extrinsic!

There is a significant difference between feeling rewarded and being rewarded.  Games tend to only offer extrinsic rewards for activities the player already finds fun.

4.  Understand the Power of Flow!

Over time, people acquire skill.  When you do something you love and are good at, you develop a flow that often can not be interrupted!

5.  Know your Players!

Stop thinking about customers but instead about players! It is crucial to understand who they are and what they want to play for!

6. Explore The Theory of Fun!

Fun is just another word for learning and many people play for different reasons.  What does it mean to have fun?  Why is work usually not fun?

7.  Understand Mechanics Aren’t Design!

Games are not fun because they are games. Games are fun because  they are well designed and properly used mechanics to drive motivation. Mechanics alone do not make something more interesting!

What Does This Mean For Gamifiers?

So what is the future of Gamification?  It is up for you to decide and help shape.  The choices you make now will change the future of this growing industry.  We are on the verge of the Gamepocalypse! By 2015, 50% of companies will have Gamified!  But there is a mismatch between what science knows and what business does. There have been decades of research dealing with the idea of play, motivation, and influence that most gamifiers have so far overlooked.  EnGaming hopes these points will help guide you when planning for the future!
